Pantyhose

Like many of the garments mass-marketed to women today, pantyhose were first worn by fashionable men.

In the 14th century, men often wore a form of hosiery underneath their tunics. Think Robin Hood in Tights. Back then, women did not bare their legs. Over time, however, these roles have been reversed; men now cover their legs while it is socially acceptable for women to bear theirs.

Pantyhose

The word “pantyhose” comes from a combination of the words panties and hosiery. They are sheer undergarments worn frequently by women, although some men wear a version known as boxerhose.

When the garment first appeared in the 1960s, it was constructed from nylon (and in fact was referred to as nylons). At first they were a convenient combination of underwear and stockings, covering the legs thereby providing warmth for the wearer. But time and technology have morphed the pantyhose of yesteryear into a miracle worker for less-than-perfect legs.

From beautification to medication, pantyhose serve a wide variety of needs:

1. In the history of fashion, it had almost always been considered crude for a woman to bear her legs. As the restrictive parameters of fashion lifted, so did skirt hemlines. This revealed many pairs of not-so-perfect legs. When wearing mid-length or short skirts, many women choose to wear pantyhose to conceal varicose veins and uneven skin-tone. Black pantyhose or tights (now a closet staple for any fashionista) are worn to give the appearance of slimmer legs.

Before the creation of spray tanning, many women also wore pantyhose to get instantly tanned legs. Pantyhose sometimes come with a control top, designed to give the wearer a more streamlined look.

2. Some athletes wear pantyhose for warmth. For example, football sensation Joe Namath starred in a commercial promoting Hanes Beautymist Pantyhose. However, he claimed he did not wear the pantyhose himself. Male equestrians wear pantyhose to protect against chafing and blisters. Men do not actually wear the type of pantyhose marketed to women. They generally wear boxerhose, a manly version of pantyhose bearing little resemblance to boxers.

3. They also serve a medical purpose. Some patients wear them to increase blood circulation. Some people with Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) wear them on long flights.

4. Some women and men have a fetish for pantyhose – either wearing them or seeing someone else wear them. With this fetish, the undergarment may be worn or played with during sexual activity. Some men simply like to admire women in pantyhose because of its proximity to the naked body.

Stockings

Stockings are similar to pantyhose in that they are sheer and close-fitting, but these normally only cover the foot and part of the leg. They are not supposed to conceal the entire leg. Sold as two separate pieces – one for each leg – they can be referred to as thigh-highs.

With the exception of warmth pantyhose provide, some people prefer stockings for:

1. Personal and sexual convenience- Since stockings only cover part of the leg there is easier access to the genital area. No need to fuss with pantyhose and underwear if you are wearing stockings. It is easier to pee and quicker to have sex. Not at the same time, though.

2. Aesthetics- You may not be able to slenderize your figure with stockings, but you can wear them with garter belts or girdles. They are available in a wide variety of colors and styles.

3. Erotic intent- Letting a sliver of thigh peek out from beneath a skirt or dress is tempting. These may also be paired with merrywidows or garters when worn as sexy lingerie.
