Plus-Size Lingerie

Published: September 20, 2006

Once upon a time in a land not far away, there were a group of plus-sized women who were stuck with decidedly un-sexy lingerie.

These lovelies were forced to wear poorly-fitted bras and panties, stuck with lingerie available in wide variety colors. Black, beige, white and maybe – if they were lucky – even a pale pink or baby blue. There was a time when they were referred to as full-figured, pleasantly plump or just plain fat. But one thing was certain; there was a complete lack of appealing, well-fitting lingerie for these women.

With roughly 30 percent of the female population wearing a size 12 to 16, and 18 percent wearing a size 16 or larger in the United States alone, it is about time clothing manufacturers took notice of this under-appreciated market.

Since the hideous past of plus-size lingerie is nearing an end, it is time to celebrate. The figures for plus-size clothing are increasing. For example, according to Market Research.com, retail of plus-size clothing sales in the U.S. grew 33 percent from 1996 to 2000, and spending on plus-size clothing grew 5 percent more than regular-sized clothing from 1998 to 2001. There are now so many stores and Web sites carrying beautiful, sexy, plus-size lingerie that they sometimes are hard to keep track of. Some places even cater exclusively to plus-sized women, offering a wide variety of lingerie ranging from everyday wear to sexy after-hours couture.

With so many options finally available to plus-sized women, it can be hard to know what to wear and how to wear it well.

Types of Plus-Size Lingerie

Thankfully, plus-size lingerie is not much different from straight-sized lingerie, and neither are the styles. These styles are likely to be more flattering on full-figured women.

Babydoll: this short nightgown contains formed cups and is intended for sleepwear
Body Stocking: this bodysuit offers coverage from the neck down to the ankles or toes
Bustier: this type of bra extends beneath the waist to offer additional support and sex appeal
Chemise: this is a short, revealing slip
Corset: this snug-fitting garment cinches the waist and lifts the breasts
Garter: an elastic leg band originally designed to hold up stockings, this lingerie is now solely used for sex appeal
Garter Belt: this often lacey belt is worn around the waist with garter straps
Hot Pants: these are very short pants
Merry Widow: this is a short, strapless corset with cups and garters
Peignoir: this lingerie is a long, usually sheer, nightgown
Teddy: this one-piece article has high-cut legs and a thong back

Fit, Fabric and Feel

When deciding what article of plus-size lingerie to wear, is important to remember how a piece fits and how it makes you feel. Lingerie sizes for full-figured women run from 1X to 6X, so it is possible to find something sexy to wear, no matter what your size.

Keep in mind, bras and panties should lie flush with the body. If you are falling out of anything, then it is too tight. On the other hand, though, you do not want to cover everything up.

Plus-size lingerie is available in a range of materials. Silk, satin and Chantilly lace are good choices since they reveal just enough, while still feeling comfortable against the skin. Some other fabrics include cotton, nylon and leather. Cotton and nylon, however, do not necessarily scream sex appeal. Some other fabrics include chiffon, fishnet, jacquard and microfiber.

The most important thing to remember is that if you do not feel comfortable, you may not feel sexy. The trick is to wear whatever feels right.
