Foot Fetishes

Fetish is derived from the Latin root factisius, “artificial,” and facere, “to make.”  It pertains to a natural or man-made object believed to have supernatural powers. In terms if sexual expression, a fetish is a stimulus for sexual arousal.  While there are many fetishes associated with sex, the most common is the foot fetish, or podophilia. It is especially common among men.

Foot fetishism (and fetishisms in general) is not a disease.  In popular culture, the fetish simply refers to a sexual preoccupation with an object.

Many psychological and physiological reasons lie behind one’s sexual attraction to the foot.

Psychologically speaking, the attraction to feet may originate form an infant’s experience crawling around his mother’s feet. Vilayanur Ramachandran, a neuropsychologist noted the feet and genitals occupy the same sensory cortex, meaning the two become interconnected at some point. Even still, others have noted the sweat glands present on feet are the same sweat glands produced in the genitals and armpits.

Any and all aspects of the foot may be attractive to a foot fetishist, but there are varietals within this particular community. One foot-lover may find dirty, sweaty feet intensely arousing, while another fetishist is repulsed by dirty feet; he might be into small, clean and dainty feet.  Other rules of attraction may include the shape and size of the feet and toes, texture or dress (barefoot or clothed).

A fetishist may express his sexual desire in a number of ways.  Kissing or licking the feet and toes, tickling and sniffing (the foot or the shoe) are all methods the fetishist might enjoy.  Shrimping, or sucking the toes, is also popular among those who are further aroused by toes.  Sometimes feet are engaged in sexual intercourse. The fetishist may have sex using the foot, or may have sex while holding any part of the foot.

A closely related fetish is retifism, a shoe fetish.  This involves a fixation on shoes, which may either be on or off the foot. One activity shoe fetishists may relish in is shoe dangling, whereby the wearer dangles the shoe, partially exposing the foot.

Men may be especially attracted to high-heeled shoes, or any other shoe full of sexual innuendo.  Men may also be attracted to the odor of the shoe itself, inhaling the odors from a shoe after the wearer had taken it off.  Some men might even enjoy masturbation or intercourse with a shoe.
